FORT DEL PILAR – Seven women were among the top 10 graduates of this year’s Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class, the institution’s superintendent said.

PMA Superintendent Lieutenant General Ireneo Espino presented the top 10 graduates of this year’s batch, with seven women topping the class, the biggest ever in the history.

Cadet First Class Jestoni Lanaja, son of a "tuba" (coconut wine) gatherer from Davao del Sur, topped the class of 124 cadets this year.

Lanaja will receive the Presidential Saber from President Benigno Aquino III during the graduation ceremonies of Pudang-Kalis (Puso’t dangal ng mga Kawal ng Lahing Nagkakaisa) Class of 2013 on March 17.

Pudang-Kalis is from Muslim origins meaning sacred sword. The sword is passed by a Muslim clan from generation to generation; thus the class used the name in the belief they are like a sword whose blade will never perish from generation to generation.

Lanaja, as well as the next topnotcher, Cadet First Class Maryam Balais of Benguet, are Muslims.

The other top graduates of the PMA this year are Prolen Bonacua of Valenzuela City; Jesse Saludo of Valenzuela City; Joselyn Advincula of Tagaytay City; Leode John Tulang of Agusan del Sur; Mark Ferdinand Villamin of Batangas; Vanessa Pascual of Antipolo City; Jhed Dumocloy of Cagayan; and Maila Maniscan of South Cotabato.

Fifth placer Advincula joins the Army and is set to receive the Association of Generals and flag officers’ award, Humanities Plaque and the Australian Defence Best overall Performance Award.

Pascual placed eighth while Gonzales, who also opted to join the Army, ranked tenth in PMA’s top 10 cadets.

Female special awardees are cadet Ibrade (Tactics Group award); cadet Bagsang (Number 1 in Physical Education courses); and cadet Gonzales (Journalism award).

PMA Superintendent Lieutenant General Ireneo Espino said the women topping the class is the biggest group to haul top citations in the academy since the graduation of the famed magnificent 7 in 1996, the first time the academy accepted women into the fold.

Out of the 124 graduating cadets, 19 are females.

Sixty-seven graduates will join the Army, 24 the Air force and 33 will join the Navy.

‘Tuba’ gatherer is proud papa of PMA top gun

AIMING HIGH Things are looking up for “tuba” (coconut wine) gatherer Antonio Lanaja, whose son, Jestony, topped the PMA Class of 2013. ORLANDO DINOY/INQUIRER MINDANAO

HAGONOY, Davao del Sur—Antonio Lanaja has a lot to thank God for his answered prayers.

The 46-year-old tuba (coconut wine) gatherer in this farming town outside the provincial capital of Digos remembers that he had to sell some of his farm animals so he could send his son Jestony to Quezon City to take his entrance examination to the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

On Monday, Lanaja was beaming with pride as he talked to the Inquirer about how he had struggled to send the eldest of his three children to school, who will graduate at the top of his class at the military academy in Baguio City on Sunday.

Jestony Lanaja graduated valedictorian at Sacub Elementary School in 2003. He was a consistent honor student at Digos City National High School, where he graduated in 2007.

But because of poverty, the family was unable to send Jestony to college. Instead, after high school, the boy took a short electrical course at Carmelo de los Cientos Vocational School in Padada town, where he finished at the top of his class a year later.

Lanaja said his daughter Angeline, 19, had to stop studying after high school. The youngest, John Patrick, 18, is a special child who helps him gather tuba.

Living in a small, two-bedroom house of bamboo and coco lumber in the village of Sacub, the Lanajas survived on Antonio’s earnings as a tuba gatherer and revenue from the small sari-sari store that his wife, Erlinda, operates. He also raised a cow, some pigs and goats.

Lanaja gathers tuba from 17 coconut trees on land owned by a relative of his wife, who gets P45 as monthly rental for each tree. He gathers at least 10 gallons of coconut wine every day. Each gallon is sold at P30.

In 2010 and 2011, Lanaja suffered mild strokes, making life more difficult for the family. Still, he was thankful that he is able to see his son fulfill his dreams.

“I cannot describe how I am feeling right now. My heart is full of happiness. I am so thankful to the Lord for hearing our prayers,” he said.

He said the family will travel to Baguio on March 14 to witness Jestony’s graduation from the PMA.
